A man allegedly attempted to rape his daughter-in-law and shot at her and his own mother when they resisted at Mojal village in the district, police said in Muzaffarnagar on Friday.

The victims were admitted to a hospital in serious condition after the incident last night, while the accused is absconding, police said.

Mitu, who is married to the accused Ram Kumar's son Sachin for the past four months, was sleeping with her grand mother-in-law Barfi in the house when Ram Kumar entered and tried to rape her.

When the women resisted, he shot both of them and fled. The husband of the bride was not at home during the incident.

The accused is the father of four - two sons and two daughters. His wife had committed suicide a year ago, police added.
